YSL Volupté Tint-In-Oil Look Book (& Spicing These Up With An Ombre Lip)!

I’m back again with one more lip Look Book and in this entry, I’m shifting my attention from the pow-wow and intensely pigmented to bring to you something with more of a focus on nourishing and conditioning the lips yet without letting up on performance at  the same time!

Introducing the YSL Tint in Oils! 

And using the word ‘introducing’ is quite appropriate as well since this is the Tint in Oils first solo appearance on my blog!

I want to say that these are fairly new… but they were launched sometime last year maybe? So they’re not all that fresh to the shelves either.

Though all things considered, they are a fresh new line within YSL and not a sub-category or expansion to an existing range.

While Look Book mentions are meant to be brief and picture-focused, I want to some time to introduce and describe these Tint in Oils because it’s likely I wouldn’t have another as -appropriate situation to do so. 

What’s more, given that this product has a skincare (or rather lip care?) element to it, it’s worth the added explanations of what goes inside and what they do. 

 

The Tint & The Oil –

Putting it simply, the Tint in Oils are – as the name goes – a tint suspended within a blend of 4 different lip conditioning oils.

The oils within are: apricot kernel oil, coriander seed oil, jojoba seed oil and possiflora edulis seed oil, which essentially is passion fruit but okay YSL, possiflora edulis it is.

They (the oils) all meld together harmonious to provide a formula that melts and envelops the lips once swatched on.

Even though it sounds rather intensive to have 4 sorts of oils in there, this still feels relatively lightweight on with and a smooth and emollient balmy feel to the lips.

I don’t sense any tackiness (given my general intolerance to even the slightest of tacks be it in glosses or skincare) and I’m quite a fan of applying this simply because the process just invokes a very nourishing and luxurious experience.

That’s just all the moisture and hydration aspects covered, we’ve not talked about the Tint just yet!

The Tint in Oils are available in 8 shades, if I recall right, varying in hue and intensity depending on the shade you’ve picked. Though for a product focused on lip care, I’ll say it doesn’t disappointed in the area of performance either as they (the ones tI’ve ried at least) seem to show up quite well once worn on the lips.

They provide a decent and natural hue of color –  buildable, I’ve noticed  – and that comes with a nice glossy shine that provides that perfect watery lip look. It’s most ideal for those banking into that translucent yet pouty, pigmented yet clear and natural sort of a look. 

What’s more since the hues come from a tint, tints are known to have a staining effect even after wearing off anddthese do have a little bit of that. 

The staining, I mean.

Stain aside, because it’s such a mild wash of color, this product wears for about 3-4 hours and surely would not survive food or drinks. Though for a lip conditioning product, I wouldn’t have expected anything more since these are focused on hydration and wouldn’t come with an ‘adhesive’ component which is usually leaves the lips a little sapped of moisture. 

Re-applying this isn’t a concern for me, given that the experience is joyful and the product is a beauty to whip out for touch ups!

YSL describes the Tint in Oils as a bespoke lip color because of the translucence to it as well as the varied ways that tints warm up to and develop on everyone. 

While there is a certain ‘base’ color to each of the 8 shades available, they have a tendency to show up differently on everyone.

On me these show up well and build up easily to an intense (but still watery and translucent) hue. Though, just as explained, how it shoes up on me may not be the case for you so it’s best to give these a swatch before your purchase!

That said, let’s have a look at the 2 shades I have!

This was swatched ‘normally’, where I apply product to both the top and the bottom lip, like I typically would when I am applying gloss or liquid lipstick.

In a way it’s considered one layer without deliberately trying to build the color up.

Like Cherie My Cherry above, this too was also 1 coat applied to both the upper and lower lips without deliberately trying to build the color up.

I have also noticed that for the Tint in Oils, upon initial application they may go on clear and almost colorless but if you leave it to settle and warm up on your lips for a little bit (it’s really quick, a couple seconds?) that’s when the color seems to develop and start to show up.

So don’t get startled if it goes on colorless the second you apply because you need to let it have some time to work.

I know this Look Book post is getting quite lengthy and comprehensive that I should just label it a review, but for the sake of uniformity let’s just call this a really in-depth Look Book.

So aside from simply showing how these swatch alone, which frankly is fine and beautiful if glossy and watery sheers like that are what you’re looking for, YSL’s Makeup Artist Zona had taught me a little trick to spice these up should you want the same nourishing and deep conditioning benefits but yet also want a little color and a more playful twist to the look.

Cue, the Lip Ombre trend!

I know this trend has been making it rounds and I’ve since slipped out of being obsessed about it but the Tint in Oils make it easy to revisit because of the look of watery suspended color. Now all you need is a more intense lip color as your ombre and voila!

I snapped a step-by-step while I attempted this look on my own, so have a look!

 

The Ombre Option

First you apply a really sheer coat of the Tint in Oil. I require mine to be sheer because they seem to develop quite strongly on my lips.

If you’d really like to further strengthen the ombre effect, you may even dab some concealer or face powder on your lips before going in with the Tint in Oil.

Next up, pick your ombre-ed color and for this look I used YSL’s Pur Couture The Mat in 208 (as seen here).

Dab it on the inner portions of your lips. Pardon the blurry picture but apparently my camera, too, felt it was too unglam a sort of shot to focus on, ha.

I always forgot how much I really do like the look of ombre lips till I bother to attempt them again.

Something about it is so effortlessly casual yet still made up at the same time and I’m glad that I now have the Tint in Oils to help make achieving this look that much easier!

So phew, that is that for the YSL Lip Look Book Series that I had in mind!

Actually.. I do have the Gloss Voluptes on hand too, from awhile back when they were first introduced I believe, but given how I’m not too huge of a gloss fan and I wouldn’t have much to say (and also, frankly the lack of time to do those looks up) I decided to pass on including them within this Series.

Though if anyone is still interested to know what I feel about the Gloss Voluptes and see looks / swatches of the ones I’ve got, you can drop me a note and I would gladly do it up for you at a later date!

I’m sorry if the recent posts just aren’t quite ‘the same’ in a way. I’m not sure if I’m the only one feeling it but I’ve been going in and out of that writers block situation again but didn’t want to compromise on cutting down mentions I want to post and things I wanted to talk about so I really squeeze out whatever little writing capacity I have in the block to put stuff out and I hope they’re still coherent and not overly rambly!
